| Title: |
 |
| Petroleum Tank Farm Expansion |
| Location: |
| Houston Area |
| YEAR COMPLETED: |
| 2007 |
| |
| Project Description: |
To allow a greater number of “boutique fuels” to be handled through a petroleum transportation hub with multiple dock facilities and pipelines, Arseal Technologies was selected to prepare the complete electrical design for a major tank farm expansion.
Arseal’s role was to analyze the facilities existing design, identify cost savings, construction and maintenance enhancements, determine the capacity of the existing electrical distribution system and understand the operating philosophy of the overall facility.
Once the background of the facility was learned, Arseal had the task of integrating 13 new tanks, over 170 motor operated valves, a mixture of vertical and horizontal medium- voltage motors, a vapor combustion unit and a vapor evacuation system driven by a VFD.
|
To control the new equipment, 6 new PLC panels utilizing A-B SLC 505 processors were designed. A fiber optic network was extended to interconnect the existing communication network with the new equipment. To support the new electrical loads, a 5 MVA, 12.5 kV to 2400 volt substation was needed along with medium and low voltage motor control. Arseal prepared the equipment specifications for this equipment to be installed in pre-fabricated buildings, managed the bidding process for the client and verified that the final equipment met the customer’s requirements.

 |
To complete the electrical design, Arseal utilized the client’s electrical design and construction standards and, where practical, enhanced them to reduce design and construction costs for the project. Construction specifications and electrical drawings created in the AutoCAD format were provided for the electrical construction bidding process and final construction drawings.
The success of the project design was dependent on good communications that occurred with multiple entities and many different methods including:
|
- Face to face Operations meetings with local technical and managerial staff
- Preliminary design philosophy meetings with customer engineering staff
- Weekly phone conferences with customer project management
- Face to face design review meetings with local personnel and vendors
- Project status tracking review with engineers and designers
- Technical meetings with local utilities

Let Arseal help you with your next tank farm expansion.
